第八章第二次启蒙运动
马丁·芮斯爵士（SirMartinRees）是世界上最杰出的天文学家之一。这位著名的剑桥大学教授在2003年出版了他的著作《时终》（OurFinalHour），在科学界激起一阵波澜。芮斯警告，一种新型的高风险科学实验和研究威胁到一切地球生命的生存，甚至宇宙本身的生存。他说，他认为“我们目前的地球文明将生存到本世纪末的概率不超过五十比五十”＇1＇。通常，这种惊人之语都根本不会被理睬，或被看做傻瓜的胡言乱语，但这回，这一警告获得了媒体的重视，并成为科学界一些争论的主题，因为它来自一位德高望重的使者。
质疑不受羁绊的科学追求
芮斯是黑洞学权威，在有关生命本身的起因和方式问题上，他的许多同僚认为，他关于宇宙起源和演变的理论倘若不说是一锤定音，至少也是最好的理论。所以，当芮斯提出某些现行和计划中的科学研究或许不应该开展，因为它们对生命构成了巨大的潜在风险的时候，他的话如同刮过科学界的一阵不祥之风，威胁到了科学的准则本身。不论如何，无拘无束的科学探求的观念乃是现代科学之根基。启蒙主义科学就是建立在对自然的秘密不懈追求的观念上。试图限制这种追求，或者对研究方法加以束缚，这在许多科学界人士看来不啻于压制科学精神本身。启蒙主义的设计师们说，“人类的”本性就是好奇心。我们是普罗米修斯式的造物，不断探索着去理解宏大的事物秩序，以求积聚力量控制自然力，掌握自己的命运。倘若人类要就思想能够探索的对象给自身施加限制的话，那么，对于现代世界思维而言如此基本的进步观念将会丧失合法意义。此外，怀疑我们运用理性来控制和引导自然力以及我们自身未来的能力，这种思想将意味着地球生命的完善性这一备受珍爱的乌托邦梦想的终结。由于上述理由，自启蒙主义开端起，科学界便认为几乎人类的所有探索都值得追求。
