I have changed my mind about my body。 I used to think of it as a kind of hardware on 
which my mental and behavioral software was running。 Now; I primarily think of my body 
as software。 


My body is not like a typical material object; a stable thing。 It is more like a flame; a river 
or an eddie。 Matter is flowing through it all the time。 The constituents are being replaced 
over and over again。 


A chair or a table is stable because the atoms stay where they are。 The stability of a river 
stems from the constant flow of water through it。 


98 percent of the atoms in the body are replaced every year。 98 percent! Water molecules 
stays in your body for two weeks (and for an even shorter time in a hot climate); the atoms 
in your bones stays there for a few months。 Some atoms stay for years。 But almost not 
one single atom stay with you in your body from cradle to grave。 


What is constant in you is not material。 An average person takes in 1。5 ton of matter every 
year as food; drinks and oxygen。 All this matter has to learn to be you。 Every year。 New 
atoms will have to learn to remember your childhood。 


These numbers has been known for half a century or more; mostly from studies of 
radioactive isotopes。 Physicist Richard Feynman said in 1955: 〃Last week's potatoes! They 
now can remember what was going on in your mind a year ago。〃 


But why is this simple insight not on the all…time Top 10 list of important discoveries? 
Perhaps because it tastes a little like spiritualism and idealism? Only the ghosts are for 
real? Wandering souls? 


But digital media now makes it possible to think of all this in a simple way。 The music I 
danced to as a teenager has been moved from vinyl…LPs to magnetic audio tapes to CDs

to Pods and whatnot。 The physical representation can change and is not important — as 
long as it is there。 The music can jump from medium to medium; but it is lost if it does not 
have a representation。 This physics of information was sorted out by Rolf Landauer in the 
1960'ies。 Likewise; out memories can move from potato…atoms to burger…atoms to banana… 
atoms。 But the moment they are on their own; they are lost。 


We reincarnate ourselves all the time。 We constantly give our personality new flesh。 I keep 
my mental life alive by making it jump from atom to atom。 A constant flow。 Never the same 
atoms; always the same river。 No flow; no river。 No flow; no me。 


This is what I call permanent reincarnation: Software replacing its hardware all the time。 
Atoms replacing atoms all the time。 Life。 This is very different from religious reincarnation 
with souls jumping from body to body (and souls sitting out there waiting for a body to take 
home in)。 


There has to be material continuity for permanent reincarnation to be possible。 The 
software is what is preserved; but it cannot live on its own。 It has to jump from molecule to 
molecule; always in carnation。 


I have changed my mind about the stability of my body: It keeps changing all the time。 Or I 
could not stay the same。

《佛说大乘金刚经论》(又名:金刚果论、金刚心总持论) 
  开示初机论第一: 
  如是我闻。一时。 佛在灵鹫山中清净台上。与诸菩萨声闻。天龙八部围绕听佛说法。 
时有无量初发心比丘。比丘尼。优婆塞。优婆夷各作是念。佛说大法。我意不通。愿佛方 
便。浅处 开示。令我等辈。悟佛知见。皆得道果。若欲请问。不得近前。尔时。文殊师 
利菩萨知诸四众心之所念。即作方便从座而起。前白佛言。世尊大慈。愿设方便。开示 
初机。直指众生。见性成佛。乃为末世初进佛门求道众生。得正知见。不遭邪惑。不假多 
功。皆得道果。佛言。善哉善哉。 
  金刚心论第二: 
  文殊师利。有大方便。请问如来。开示三根。及于末世。初入门者。修行正路。从汝 
所问。当为汝说。时诸大众。默然而听。 
   佛告文殊师利菩萨。有陀罗尼名金刚心。能令众生。一见一闻。便得道果。善男子。 
云何名金刚心。此心人人本有。个个不无。是诸众生自知自觉本等之心。何以 故。一切 
善恶。皆出自心。自心修善。令身安乐。自心造恶。令身受苦。心是身主。身是心用。所 
以者何。佛由心成。道由心学。德由心积。功由心修。福由心作。 祸由心为。心能作天 
堂。心能作地狱。心能作佛。心能作众生。是故心正成佛。心邪成魔。心慈是天人。心恶 
是罗刹。心是一切罪福种子。若有人悟自心。把得定。 作得主。不造诸恶。常修诸善。 
依佛行持。立佛行愿。佛说是人。不久成佛。若有善男子。善女人。求佛道者。不明自心。 
名未成佛。若人明自心。达自性。依佛修 行。决定成佛。胜如颂读金刚经三十万遍。功 
德无比。何以故。一切诸佛及诸佛。阿耨多罗三藐三菩提法。皆从自心流出。无穷无尽不 
坏不杂。故名金刚心。悟此心 者。名悟佛心。是故佛与众生。心性一般。只因修与不修。 
信与不信。所以有成佛者。有众生也。 
  金刚经论第三: 
  文殊师利菩萨问佛。云何名金刚经。 
   世尊曰。金刚喻自性。经者喻自心。若人明自心。见自性。是人自己身中有经。六 
根门头。常放光明。照天照地。具足恒沙功德。出生四果、四相、十圣、三宝。 乃至如 
来三十二相。八十种好。一切功德。皆从自己心地修成。不从外得。何以故。若是明心见 
性之人。常闻自己心佛。时时说法。时时度众生。时时现神通。时时 作佛事。得此理者。 
名持金刚经。名得金刚不坏身也。 
  四句偈论第四: 
  文殊师利菩萨问佛。金刚经中佛常赞叹受持四句偈等。为人演说。所得福德。胜将七 
宝堆满东西南北。四维上下虚空布施之福。又胜初日分。中日分。后日分。乃至百千万劫 
以来。恒河沙等身命布施之福。未审云何是四句偈。

   佛言。一切众生皆有佛性。本来不生本来不灭。只因迷误而致升沉。何以故。众生 
长迷不觉。所以永劫堕落。诸佛常觉不迷。所以永成佛道。若有男女求佛道者。 进道功 
程。权分四级。号四句偈。一曰空身。二曰空心。三曰空性。四曰空法。云何空身。身是 
父母所生。亦具父母息气。九孔常流种种不净。四大假合。终须败 坏。有知男女知身是 
幻。未死之前。当死一般。借此幻身。学佛修行。名悟身空一句偈也。复观自心。非生非 
灭最圣最灵。遇境似有。境灭还无。令悟真心。常觉不 昧。不随妄想流转。但依真性主 
行。名悟心空二句偈也。复观自性寂然不动。感而遂通。变化无穷。威灵莫测。明明了了。 
自觉自知。灵灵寂寂。无为常为。名悟性 空三句偈也。复观如来所说经法。皆是方便。 
引导法门。如水洗尘。似病与药。令证心空法了。病退药除。名悟法空四句偈也。此四句 
偈乃是超凡入圣。进道门路。 三世如来从此成佛。十方菩萨。依此进功。所以者何。悟 
得初句意。依义修行。便证预流须陀洹果。悟二句意。依义修行。便证一来斯陀含果。悟 
三句意。依义修 行。便证不来阿那含果。悟四句意。依义修行。便证无诤阿罗汉果。此 
四句偈。大开诸佛道门。受持读诵。为人演说。能令闻者。悟佛知见。成佛无疑。是故得 
福胜 前七宝身命布施。所得福德。百千亿分不及其一。 
  十种功德论第五: 
  佛告文殊师利。前佛后佛一 体。皆在各人自己。明心见性。修而成之。然则佛性人 
人本有。不投佛修终不成佛。何以故。为无佛功。有求佛者。一用斋戒为佛基址。二投明 
师。指示功程。三识 心性。了了分明。四用作福。助初发根苗。五用结缘。增自善本。 
六明因果。不妄主
